Allow Mother Nature some Dignity

By Vernon Stent For every action there is a reaction. So said Newton. Although he was referring to the law of motion, I think that this law can also be applied to nature. Even if we toss away a sweet wrapper, a bird may use it to build a nest. A child may spill their cola and soon enough some ants may come along and feed on it. If we construct a building where there used to be wasteland, then nature will react. Some creatures will avoid the new building; others will be attracted to it. In recent times some authorities have built special underground tunnels for badgers under new roads. In fact there are countless examples of schemes where nature has been given a helping hand. The trouble is, do we know what effect our improvements are having on the rest of the eco-system? Is there a danger that we will do even more damage? It could also be argued that humans, including its roads, buildings and machines, are also part of the eco-system. Should we try to neutralize the effect of our actions on other species? Another consideration is the problem of extinction. We tend to try to save creatures that are on the point of extinction. It could be argued that an endangered species is no longer viable and should be left alone to die out in order to allow the remainder to thrive. We increasingly fiddle with nature in order to help it out. The problem is that for every action that affects nature, there will be a reaction. We come along and try to prevent the reaction by instituting another action, which itself may produce other reactions that we may not have intended. The problem is rarely debated, it seems. Surely there are two extremes: 1. build and be dammed and 2. dont build at all. We seem to be moving to a mid point of: build and manage nature. This is where there may be a problem. Surely we are not qualified to manage the might of nature. Perhaps we should respect nature and allow it the dignity to cope on its own with our more necessary building works. For the less important buildings and machines well perhaps we should not build them at all. I am suggesting that we in fact go to BOTH extremes, but not take the middle road of trying to manage nature. We should at least have a decent debate about it. Whole industries have built up around nature conversation, forest and river management. I wonder sometimes if the conservation industry itself is a mighty machine that needs to be constantly fed with more and more things to do in order to employ its ever growing army. Surely we can reduce our need to construct ever more powerful machines and larger and more numerous buildings but also, we surely can reduce our need to interfere with Mother Nature and allow her some dignity. Nature has the ability to bite back. If you are going to build a house where there were once fields, you may find out that some creatures will not be aware of trespass laws and will try to enter your new home. This is particularly true of houseflies. Try building a tunnel for them! I suppose you could be very eco-friendly and obtain thousands of spiders to weave webs in order to trap them. But then, kidnapping all these spiders and farming them yourself could deprive the food chain of a resource and destabilize it. Perhaps it is best not to fiddle too much with nature. By Angie Maroevich Lets face it. A nice tan makes you look and feel great. Plus, it can hide ugly cellulite and also make you appear thinner! If you are going on a trip or you simply want to look good for an event thats coming up, its important to establish a base tan. Here are some 10 indoor tanning steps to help you achieve a nice base tan without getting burned*. By the way, if you are hesitant about using an indoor tanning bed but want to get a tan, try a UV-free spray tan like Mystic Tan. Otherwise, the steps below will help guide you through the UV indoor tanning process: 1. Be careful if you are on any prescription medications: blood pressure medications, antibiotics, skin problem medications are just a few categories of drugs you preferably should not be taking if you are tanning or spending lots of time outdoors. Refer to the photosensitizing medication chart in your local tanning salon to be sure the medications you are taking are not listed. These medications can effect the results of your tanning, making it more difficult to tan and you are more prone to burning. 2. Always use a good quality indoor tanning lotion. It will help your skin to absorb the UV, which will aid in the tanning process. There are also special ingredients that stimulate melanin production, such as Tyrosine, which will give you the most out of every tanning session. Your skin tends to dry out during the tanning process and if you dont use a good quality indoor tanning lotion, your skin will exfoliate faster, become more dry and flaky, and you will lose your tan faster. So the bottom line: for a deeper, darker, longer lasting tan, you need to use quality indoor tanning lotion. Its best to apply indoor tanning lotion immediately prior to your session or 1-2 hours prior is even better if you can. Applying it ahead of time allows your skin to absorb the lotion better so you will get the best results from your tanning session. 3. Apply after tan lotion as well to take care of your skin and keep it moisturized. Apply it twice daily at a minimum to keep your skin happy, once in the morning and again at night before bed. This also can enhance your tan and make it longer lasting- the key to a great tan is healthy skin! 4. If you are just beginning to tan, remember to start out conservative. Whatever you do, you dont want to burn- you cannot tan on top of a burn and you will have to start over. The old saying I always burn first and then I tan is completely false, it simply does not have to be this way. If you burn, your skin is telling you that its getting too much sun, and then you will peel. So start out with a low number of minutes and work your way up. If you have fair skin but do have the ability to tan, you should not go more than 6-7 minutes your first time in a standard 20 minute tanning bed (also known as a Level 1 tanning bed). For stronger beds with shorter tan times, you would go for even less minutes. 5. Go once every 24-48 hours to build your base. Depending on how well your skin is doing, you can decide whether you can go once a day or once every other day. A good rule of thumb is if your skin is not pink within the 24 hours after your session, you can probably go again the next day without any problem. If your skin is pink, feels dry and itchy, or you get a rash, this is a signal that you went for too many minutes and need to take a break until it feels better and then start over again. 6. Once you build up your base, you really dont need to tan as often. So depending on the type of bed you are using, you should only go 2-3 times per week to keep your tan, even less in stronger beds. This is where I see many people go overboard, tanning every day when it is really not necessary. Many people enjoy the relaxation time that tanning provides, but tanning too often can and will speed up your aging process and potentially cause other skin ailments over a long period of time. Just like everything else in life, moderation is key! 7. Wear eye goggles at all times! Many people think that putting a towel over their face will block the UV rays, but it doesnt and repeated UV exposure can cause major eye problems later in life. Would you rather be blind or have lighter eyelids? I think I would choose the latter, but that is just me. For your own safety, please wear the eye goggles! 8. Since indoor tanning does not require the use of a bathing suit, use a towel to cover those sensitive areas that dont see the sun very often if you want to tan all over. In the beginning, try covering those areas for half the session and see how it goes. Gradually you can remove the towel earlier and earlier until you dont need to use one anymore. The towel acts as a filter but wont completely block the UV rays, so you are still getting the tanning process started. 9. To avoid getting creases or pressure tanning lines, you should move your limbs into different positions during your session. For the first half, try laying down with both arms extended above your head and legs apart. For the second half, bring your arms down next to your sides but away from your body, and re-position your legs by raising one knee slightly for a half of the remaining time, and then the other leg do the same thing. 10. Try to avoid wearing make-up, deodorant, or other perfumes prior to tanning. Some of these things can make your skin more sensitive and possibly have a bad reaction with your skin when exposed to UV. If you wear a lot of deodorant, you may notice that you are not tanning as well around your armpits, and you need to remove this prior to tanning. When it comes to tanning, every persons skin type is different and results will vary. In this model, viewpoints or perspectives are added to create more, though not necessarily all, of the whole picture. This is simply using different perspectives as one would jig-saw pieces and as you will see allows very diverse subject matter and perspectives to fit together in a harmonious whole, rather than produce the endless argument and conflict about right and wrong. The endless polar struggles can be brought to resolution in this light. The view at microscopic level This is the level that most people understand as scientific. Much scientific study is undertaken at this ordinarily invisible level.. It involves examining tissue under the microscope which is displaying disease and making comparison with healthy tissue. It seeks to view at the level of the microscope and indeed at the molecular level and to describe and theorise about the patterns and the progression of the disease at that level. It also seeks to intervene at that level by inhibiting or blocking changes associated with disease and/or promoting changes which would be associated with health. The view at ordinary level The ordinary level is the visible level of the body. It is seen with the eyes and felt with the hands. It can be viewed perhaps by an x-ray image. This is what disease look like at the body level. It is the patchy redness of a sore throat and the red painful fluidy swelling of an abscess. These first two levels constitute the main areas of what might be called the accepted science. It can be seen and measured to some degree and so is thought of as real or hard science. My science is better than yours!? Real or hard science are terms often used to discredit the so-called soft sciences. The basis of this realness or hardness is essentially measurability. The more measurable and verifiable the phenomenon, the harder the science, the more difficult to measure and verify the softer the science. Hard science tends to look down its nose at the softer science, thinking itself real and definite while the other is nebulous, unreal and thus not to be relied upon. This is a very understandable position because the physical is so obvious, visible and measurable. The non-physical by contrast is not easily visible and measurable and so is therefore somewhat untrustworthy from that point of view. In relation to people and disease, the non-physical element is the emotional and mental element. This element of humanity plays a huge role in our attitudes and behaviours but unfortunately cannot readily be measured and so is either ignored, discredited or discounted entirely. While this is certainly understandable, it can never be desirable to leave out or discount such a huge part of what it is to be human. Disease it might be argued can be seen physically and measured, therefore disease is physical and so the solution to it must be a physical one. This type of partial thinking has allowed us to separate the physical part of ourselves from the emotional or mental part and assume that these levels exist independently and separately. It even allowed us to think that one part of the body can be treated separately and independently of other parts. Thus dental medicine is considered a separate entity from general medicine. Dental medicine affects the dental tissues and the surrounding environment and general medicine has to do with the rest of the body. This is, of course, a thoroughly insane idea despite the fact that this is how we not only view but also practice these disciplines. The Emotional Level This is the first of the soft levels and of course this is where much of the controversy begins. Emotions in general are not viewed well by scientists. They might be seen as the realm of poets and writers, song and story but they are not science. Emotions are viewed as subjective, unpredictable and volatile, undependable and untrustworthy. It is fine to write songs, poems or novels and these are fine as entertainment but keep all that away from science (knowledge). Science, by contrast, is objective, predictable and measurable, dependable and trustworthy. Yet our emotional life is so caught up with our physical habits and behaviours that to try to study human disease without reference to our humanness especially our human emotions is and will soon be seen as an extraordinarily foolish undertaking. The Mental Level This is the most misunderstood level because the mental level that gives rise to emotions is generally unconscious and so not particularly available to scrutiny or study. Yet it is a true causal level, since it gives rise to the emotions that dictate attitude and behaviour on a physical level. Addiction is a good example of how poor self-belief gives rise to the negative emotions and feelings that we try to hide or disperse with alcohol, cigarettes or other substances The Societal Level This is the over-level that is responsible for the general attitudes and beliefs to which people subscribe. All people born into the world will be subject to prevailing attitudes and beliefs and will to greater or lesser extent to influenced by them. No person will be able to avoid this societal conditioning. And remember that it is conditioning, not necessarily human nature as it is often termed. As an example, up to a little over a hundred years ago, it was seen as acceptable that 50% of our human population (the female population) should not be entitled to vote! Even more stark is the fact that Australian Aboriginal people, as recently as 60 years ago, were dealt with under the Department of Wildlife! How advanced a society are we? Isnt it time that we accepted how utterly insane many of the fundamental notions of society are, and decided to look again at what we hold as true and correct. Two groups of avowed followers of Jesus Christ in Northern Ireland seem to see nothing strange in their brutal and murderous enmity of each other, despite the fact that Love thine enemy was a fundamental tenet of the divine leader that they claim they love and follow.When viewpoints are allowed to be only what they are, i.e., perspectives from different points and not immutable truths to be defended to the death, we will have begun to see reason and sanity. All around the world enthusiasts are trying to grow these beautiful plants. Their natural habitat is a humid tropical climate, which gives us a bit of a challenge if we are trying to grow them in the Northern Hemisphere. Many people have risen to this challenge and despite the fact that some horticulturists even encounter reproduction problems, as their orchids fail to multiply, others have managed to cultivate thriving Orchid specimens. So as you can see it is not impossible to grow stunning Orchids, even here in the Northern Hemisphere. Here are some essential tips that will heighten your success rate: * Select the right orchids: Even though Orchids prefer tropical climates there are some varieties that are more adaptable than others. Phalaenopsis are becoming the most commonly kept orchids. They are now more available, as garden centres, D.I.Y. stores and supermarkets and florists are now selling them. They are reasonably easy to keep and maintain, and will survive, and thrive in your home, although they mostly require re-potting once a year. * How well do you know your Orchid? Become familiar with your Orchid. Do some research and find out if your Orchids of thrives better the up in the air, down in the soil or a height in between. Your research will let you what elevation your orchid needs. Epiphytes, for example, are air-loving orchids that derive most of the nutrients necessary for their sustenance from the air. It is hard to say because each plant is an individual. Experience is the best judge and the only way to gain experience it is best to lift the pot and feel the weight. The light pots need water. If in doubt do not water until next time. The best time to water is in the morning so that surplus water has completely drained away by nightfall. Never, ever leave your orchids standing in water. Rainwater is preferential to tap water and should be warmed to the same temperature as the plants. * Orchids need air. Enthusiasts have been saying it for years but in a way, Orchids are like humans. They’ll choke with stagnant air. Make sure that their habitat is properly ventilated, but not too much, as this could ruin their blooms. When the weather allows, open vents or windows will give your plants the fresh air they need. In the greenhouse small electric fans can be used to move the air around and help keep leaf temperatures down in hot weather. Orchids, however, like humidity, and open vents or windows will dry the atmosphere. In the greenhouse water can be sprayed onto the floor and on the staging between the plants to raise humidity. Studying at Oxford University

By Richard Pettinger I studied PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University. I was fortunate to have a very good experience being taught by several of the top authorities. Some tutors were post graduates but they were also very helpful At Oxford most teaching is done in tutorials with College professors. Usually the tutorials are 1 or 2 students per 1 tutor. This gives a unique opportunity to discuss essays and topics with your tutor. Often the tutor can be an expert in their particular field. I was quite fortunate in having many very good tutors sometimes your reading list had books by your own tutor. This was the case with Brian Harrison who taught me British social history since 1870. The tutorials tend to last only 1 hour and you may only have 3 per week. So you are given a reading list the week before. It is then upto you to go and read the relevant books before preparing an essay. The tutorial is an opportunity to refine your arguments and understanding rather than be taught the material. It can be hard work getting through a long reading list. The trick is to be able to find the most relevant books. I used to read the introduction and conclusion before reading anything in between. It is good to learn the art of skim reading. Often you can find most of the answer in a small part of the book. In my first year I was using some A level textbooks to get a good overall standing before reading more complex books. The tutorials may take place in your college but equally they may take place in other colleges, especially if your subject is specialised. I always enjoyed going to other colleges, especially colleges like Corpus Christi and St Johns. In addition to tutorials the university also provides lectures usually during the morning. The standard of lectures in PPE were particularly good. But to be honest in my first year I never went to any lectures and I don’t think I missed out on anything, (although I did only just scrap through Philosophy prelims). In the 2nd and 3rd year I do remember going to more lectures but only if they were good. The main thing with such a system of studying is that it requires a degree of self motivation. The tutorial system at Oxford University may have to change in the future because of problems of receiving sufficient government funding (and other issues). This would be a shame. By Rafik Patel The Single Market for Investment Funds When the original Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities (UCITS) Directive was adopted in December 1985, Jacques Delors idea of a single market had only just emerged and the Single European Act with the now all too familiar 1992 objectives had yet to be endorsed. This is why, from todays perspective, the Directives fairly unambitious aim to approximate conditions of competition and to ensure more effective and more uniform investor protection was easily attained. Also, when the discussion on a modernisation of the Directive started in late 1991, nobody considered achieving a single market for investment funds the intention simply being to modernise the Directive and to include as yet nonharmonised products. Only when the Commission published its Strategic Programme in 1993 did the discussion on a single market for financial services really get off the ground. A further significant step forward came in 1999, when the modification of the UCITS Directive became part of the Financial Services Action Plan. This in turn forced the Council to advance its discussions over UCITS, which had been locked in stalemate for several years because of very different opinions on issues such as the use of derivatives, funds of funds, index funds or the passport for the depositary. Nevertheless, the basic elements of the Directive are today as undisputed and modern as they were some 20 years ago: Comprehensive information for investors; Effective supervision of the fund and its manager; Meaningful diversification in tradable and liquid instruments; Separation of management and segregation of assets These principles have made UCITS as we know them, that is an efficient savings instrument combined with a high level of investor protection. The new Directive has left these principles untouched and has even gone so far as to reinforce them. While broadening investment opportunities, for example through a wider use of derivatives, the new Directive strengthened risk-spreading rules and improved investor protection with the introduction of a simplified prospectus. While allowing new activities such as discretionary asset management, regulation of the management company too was strengthened, for example through capital requirements and rules on delegation. Despite all this, ten months after its final application date the Directive does not yet really work. A number of transitional issues are only now being solved by the Committee of European Securities Regulators (CESR) (to wit the recently closed public consultation by CESR), the two Commission Recommendations on the use of derivatives and on some contents of the simplified prospectus have yet to be implemented in many countries. Also, a number of definition problems, in particular with respect to eligible investment instruments for UCITS, are only now starting to be considered by CESR and a public consultation as well as a public hearing are planned for April/May 2005. The final Level 2 regulation will surely not be on the table before late 2005. Other issues are bound to come up once the new Directive is really working. Even when this happens, the single retail market for investment funds will not have been achieved. This is made clear in the recent report of the Commissions Experts Group on asset management. CESRs working programme on investment management already draws some conclusions. While other markets, such as insurance and banking, seem to be undergoing further development, the Commission and CESR both agree that future regulation is needed to achieve the final goal of a single market for investment funds. What such legislation might look like will be the key discussion point between legislators, regulators and the industry in the years to come. The main obstacles to the single market for investment funds have been more or less identified Cross-border registration of passported funds is still far too complicated, time consuming and expensive; Merging funds or pooling funds assets across borders is nearly impossible because of regulatory and tax barriers; The passport for the management company is not what it should be: managing funds across borders is impossible; A significant number of funds (such as real estate funds) are not covered by the Directive; As the Directive is not a Lamfalussy-style directive, any modification and/or modernisation requires a new directive, which we all know is burdensome and very time consuming. Competition Challenges Another problem is that the current Directive is mainly a so-called product directive unlike the more modern Investment Services Directive/Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (ISD/MiFiD) and other financial services directives. UCITS are increasingly competing with new products, such as structured notes, which though less regulated and less transparent are nonetheless, in the case of retail investors, difficult to distinguish from the highly regulated investment funds. Retail investors are increasingly keen on these absolute return products. Should it prove impossible to provide them with similar products under the UCITS Directive because of a restrictive interpretation of allowed investments for example, What are transferable securities? What about investment in structured notes or in listed closed ended funds? they will, in fact, be the losers. They will be driven towards products which might look cheaper, but which in reality provide a lower level of investor protection. The discussion on how to achieve a balanced regulation for UCITS in this respect will be one of the core issues on the regulatory agenda in the months ahead. However, a really convincing and consistent solution to the problem will probably not be achievable under the current Directive simply by including new products. The shape of the current Directive needs to be reconsidered. Nobody today will argue that investor protection can also be achieved through other means such as a certain level of distribution regulation, as currently being undertaken through Level 2 regulation within the MiFiD.
